The philosophy of the Music Programmes of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka is based on the views that arts and humanistic studies play an indispensable role in shaping the personality of the individual. It does this with particular references to the development of the individual’s cultural identitity, national consiousness, national pride and human destiny.
VISION AND MISSION
VISION
It is the vision of the Department that students of music, having learned the musical art, would be oriented to use such learning in the solution of practical problems confronting them in the society; and would utilize such in the development of Nigerian culture and environment.
MISSION
It is the mission of the Department of Music to pursue academic excellence in all aspects of musical learning and human endeavour relating to cultural, social, economic and manpower development needs of the Nigerian nation.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The primary aim of the Music programmes of the Department is to prepare students for competence in music as a base for further studies.
 OBJECTIVES
a.To enhance students acquaintance with performance in choral and operatic concerts for the enjoyment of music in Nigeria.
b.To provide students with adequate knowledge, skills and understanding for music and related functional disciplines.
CAREER AND EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS.
The music programmes of the department are designed:
  1. To prepare students and professional music teachers for development of the country’s educational system.
  2. To prepare students for varied music positions in private and public organizations and agencies in our present era of high technology and computerization such as radio and television houses, recording and film studios, archives, Churches and Mosques.
PROGRAMMES OFFERED AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.
The Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) Programme.
The following may apply for admission into the Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Music at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
  • Graduates of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and those of other recognized Universities who hold the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Music, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or in any other related subject area (relatedness will be ascertained by the Department of Music, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
  • Holders of OND/HND and related higher degrees in music from recognized institutions.
The Masters of Arts (M. A.) Degree Programmes.
Those for admission into these programmes include:
  • Graduates of Nnamdi Azikiwe University or of other approved Universities who have obtained the Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees in music with at least a good second-class honour or its equivalent.
  • Holders of Post Graduate Diploma in Music from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and other recognized institutions that score FCGPA of not less than 3.00 (5 point scale).
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme
Candidates for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programmes of the Department must be those who have obtained the Degree of Masters in their chosen areas of specialization in music from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka or from other approved Universities. A candidate seeking admission into Ph.D. programme would be required to have obtained FCGPA of not less than 3.5 (5point scale) at the Master’s degree.

Study of the scientific properties of musical sound and their psychological counterparts. Topics include sound sources, reflection, refraction, diffraction, outdoor music and the doppler effect.
MUS 710: Harmony, Fugue and Counterpoint 1 (3 credits)
Study of the traditional aspects of Fugue using examples for complete analysis. The general principles of fugal construction. Work on harmonic progression

Broad perspectives of the Western World’s achievements in music emphasizing leading tends, works, forms and figures.
