SYNOPSIS OF SPANISH LANGUAGE COURSES
SPA 101 Elementary Spanish I
No previous knowledge of Spanish is required for this course. The student will be introduced to simple everyday speech involving how to introduce him/herself, ask for and offer basic personal information on place of residence and about people.
SPA 102 Elementary Spanish II
A continuation of SPA 101.Upon completion of the four units that comprise SPA 101and SPA 102, the student will be able to understand and use frequently-used expressions and simple phrases in order to articulate basic needs.
SPA 111 Speech and Conversation I
This is a practice group made up of students on the same level. It involves interpersonal discussions on everyday activities and issues. The focus is correct use of grammar and vocabulary in fluent speech. The difference in Latin American and Peninsular Spanish pronunciations (the seseo and ceceo phenomena) will be highlighted.
SPA 121 Spanish Grammar I
This course is an introduction to the simple grammatical structures and vocabulary of Spanish Grammar. Students will learn the basic features of the Spanish writing system and orthography.
SPA 131 Text Composition in Spanish I
This course is an introduction to the composition of simple texts on common and simple everyday topics.
SPA 112 Speech and Conversation II
This course is a continuation of SPA 111 Speech and Conversation I. students who have successfully completed SPA 111 will learn to speak on simple everyday tasks with additionally acquired vocabulary.
SPA 122 Spanish Grammar II
This is a continuation of Spanish Grammar I. It involves exposing students to everyday use of the language through further knowledge of the grammatical structures and peculiarities of Spanish Grammar.
SPA 132 Text Composition in Spanish II
The course is a continuation of SPA 131, but at a higher level and in line with more advanced grammar knowledge being acquired at this stage.
SPA 201 Intermediate Spanish I
Requirement for this course is successful completion of SPA 101 and SPA102. At this stage, the student will learn to communicate when carrying out simple, everyday tasks that require simple and direct exchange of information about familiar or habitual matters.
SPA 202 Intermediate Spanish II
This course is a continuation of SPA 201. Students will be introduced to other aspects of communication involving shopping, places of interest, activities etc.
SPA 211 Listening Comprehension I
In this course, more advanced exercises in listening comprehension; will include speeches, lectures, and long adverts or comments. It will also include practical training in listening and speech laboratory practice.
SPA 221 Spanish Grammar III
Students will be exposed to more complex grammatical structures of the Spanish language.
SPA 241 Survey of Spanish Literature I
The course gives an overview of the beginnings of Spanish literature, through the Medieval and Renaissance Periods to the end of the 18th century with focus on the Spanish Siglo de Oro.
SPA 212 Listening Comprehension II
The course involves students undertaking more advanced exercises in listening comprehension and laboratory practice. The exercises will include speeches, lectures, and long adverts or commentaries.
SPA 222 Spanish Grammar IV
In this course, students will be engaged in more complex grammatical structures of Spanish grammar.
SPA 242 Survey of Spanish Literature I
The course focuses presents an overview of 19th and 20th century Spanish literature and social history. Special focus will be on Spanish authors in exile as well as post-Franco literature.
SPA 252 African and Latin American Literature in Spanish
The course is divided into two fields. The first will investigate the Spanish-language literature of Equatorial Guinea in western Africa and Saharawi literature. The second considers literature from Latin America with special emphasis on magic realism.
SPA 301 Advanced Spanish I
Requirement is successful completion of SPA 201and SPA 202.The student will learn how to produce simple and coherent texts on familiar subjects or on those in which he/she has a particular interest; such as describing experiences, events, and desires.
SPA 302 Advanced Spanish II
The course is a continuation of SPA 301. At the end of this course, the student will be able to understand the main points of clearly-written Spanish texts, be able to interact in simple conversations that may surface during the course of a trip throughout regions where the language is spoken.
THIRD YEAR – YEAR ABROAD

SPA 402 Comprehension and Composition in Spanish I
The course is a continuation of SPA 401. It involves practical exercises in writing different forms of Spanish texts.
SPA 411 Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE)
This course is practice- oriented. Students take an aspect of Spanish grammar and prepare a lesson for a specific group. Target learners are students in their first year or students with Spanish as an elective.
SPA 431 Advanced Essay Writing in Spanish
The course involves training in the writing of official documents. At this stage, students will be able to write letters of introduction, CV, letters of recommendation, etc.
SPA 481Translation I (English-Spanish)
English into Spanish of different registers originally written in English.
SPA 432 Literary Criticism
In this course, students will be given a survey of contemporary approaches to literary analysis with excerpts of their applications in different literary genres.
SPA 462 Linguistic Theories
Students will be given an introduction to some modern linguistic theories and approaches to linguistic analysis. The practical aspect of the course involves students undertaking linguistic analysis of grammatical categories in Spanish and any other language.
SPA 482 Translation II (Spanish-English)
Students translate only in one direction; Spanish into English of different registers originally written in Spanish.

GER 101 Elementary German I

This is a continuation of German Grammar I. It exposes the students to the use of everyday conversation as a basis for taking the students deeper into the German language structure
GER 132 Text Composition in German II
This is a continuation of Text Composition I, but at a higher level and in line with the more advanced grammar knowledge being acquired at this stage.
GER 201 Intermediate German I
Requirement for this course is successful completion of GER 101 and GER102. At this stage, the student will learn to communicate when carrying out simple, everyday tasks that require simple and direct exchange of information about familiar or habitual matters.
GER 202 Intermediate German II

GER 241 Survey of German Literature I
The course gives an overview of German literature through examining the main epochs, their features and prominent literary works. It starts from early German literature to the 16th Century.
GER 212 Listening Comprehension II
The students will be led through more advanced exercises in listening comprehension which includes listening to speeches, lectures and long adverts or comments.
GER 222 German Grammar IV
Prerequisite for this course is successful completion of GER 221. It involves further studies and practice in German grammar.
GER 242 Survey of German Literature II
The course covers the 17th and 18th century German literature by introducing the students to the major works of the period, especially lyric, poetry, drama and prose narratives as well as the philosophy and criticism of the period.
GER 252 German Literature by Africans
This is an introduction to literary works by Africans originally written in German. The course gives an overview of Black African Literature in German.
GER 301 Advanced German I
Requirement is successful completion of GER201and GER 202.The student will learn how to produce simple and coherent texts on familiar subjects or on those in which he/she has a particular interest; such as describing experiences, events, and desires.
GER 302 Advanced German II
The course is a continuation of GER 301. At the end of this course, the student will be able to understand the main points of clearly-written, High German, be able to interact in simple conversations that may surface during the course of a trip throughout regions where the language is spoken.

GER 401 Comprehension and Composition in German I
The student will learn the basics of advanced text composition in German. The focus of the course is the basics of “Deutscher Aufsatz”.
GER 402 Comprehension and Composition in German I
The course is a continuation of GER 401. It involves practical exercises in different forms of “Deutscher Aufsatz”.
GER 411 German as a Foreign Language (Practicals)
The course is in the form of Übungen or exercises connected with teaching German as a foreign language. The students must have done such Übungen/exercises in their third year/year abroad programme in Germany or any equivalent country. In this course, Students will have to take an aspect of German grammar and prepare a lesson for a specific level of learners; the target students could be the first year students or those who have to learn German as an elective.
GER 431 Advanced Essay Writing in German
This course involves exercises in writing different types of essays in German.
GER 481 Translation I
The course involves translation of original texts in Spanish, English, Igbo, etc. into the German language.
GER 432 Literary Criticism
The course provides the students with a survey of contemporary approaches to literary analysis.
GER 462 Linguistic Theories
The course is an introduction to the various modern linguistic theories. As such the course goes beyond GER 431 by looking at modern linguistic theories in general.
GER 482 Translation I (Igbo => German)
The course involves translation of original texts in the German language into Spanish, English, Igbo, etc.

CHS 101: Elementary Listening Chinese I
This course is specially for training the listening ability of the Chinese language learners. It is practical based. It will help students to learn some new words and expressions at the same time. The students would be trained to distinguish the phonetic sounds of the language and be able to differentiate one sound from similar ones. It also embraces listening to audio materials drawn from short passages.
CHS 102: Elementary Listening Chinese II
This course is specially for training the listening ability of the Chinese language learners. It is practical based. It will help students to learn some new words and expressions at the same time. CHS 103: Elementary Spoken Chinese I
This course focuses on using many listening and oral practices, to consolidate and improve student’s communicative competence (especially speaking ability) of the words and grammar learnt. It utilizes interpersonal discussions on everyday activities and issues to achieve the correct use of grammar and vocabulary in fluent speech.
CHS 104: Elementary Spoken Chinese II
This is a supplementary course to Elementary Spoken Chinese 1. It aims at creating many real life situations to facilitate students in Chinese conversational practices, to improve their Chinese listening and speaking skills, especially using Chinese to communicate with native speakers.

CHS 105: Elementary Reading Chinese I
This course aims at improving the students’ reading skill with the use of short stories drawn from real life situations to facilitate students’ ability to read and understand Chinese characters.

CHS 106: Elementary Reading Chinese II
It is a supplementary course to Elementary Reading Chinese 1. It aims at consolidating the student’s reading skills with the use of short storiesmdrawn from real life situations. It involves students undertaking more advanced exercises in reading skills.
CHS 107: Elementary Chinese Character I
This course is set to handle the Chinese learners in the process of learning all kinds of Chinese character writing and speech problems. Here, the students will learn the basic features of the Chinese writing system and orthography. They can also understand the history as well as the developmental process of Chinese characters and experience the
special beauty of Chinese characters.
CHS 108: Elementary Chinese Character II
This is a supplementary course to Elementary Chinese Character 1. The course involves the students undertaking more advanced character composition than has been practiced in the previous course.
CHS 201: Intermediate Listening Chinese I
This course is aimed at exposing the students to more advanced exercises in listening comprehension. It will also include practical training in listening and speech laboratory practice.
CHS 202: Intermediate Listening Chinese II
This course involves a comprehensive development and improvement of Chinese language learners’ listening ability and interest in learning Chinese. Hearing content close to the life of the Chinese people, all round display of contemporary Chinese social life. Explore the scientific training system of listening skills, give prominence to the listening skills of single, double and comprehensive training. Take hearing elements and content of understanding of the practice, deepen the listening skills training, to help the students to reach a higher level of learning.
CHS 203: Intermediate Spoken Chinese I
This course will teach some advanced Chinese words, expressions and grammar points. It will also concentrate on students’ expressive ability in passage, so that students can use better words for more complicated feelings, accurate opinions and apply Chinese language decently.
CHS 204: Intermediate Spoken Chinese II
This is an advancement on CHS 203.(INTERMEDIATE SPOKEN CHINESE 1). .It handles oral /spoken content close to the Chinese everyday life, all-round display of the oral communication of social life in contemporary China. It involves practical exercises, in order to improve and deepen the spoken language skills training, this will enable the students to achieve a high level of spoken Chinese.
CHS 205: Intermediate Reading Chinese I
The students will be exposed to more complex reading in order to improve their pronunciation of Chinese language.
CHS 206: Intermediate Reading Chinese II
This course requires that students learn about 1000 advanced new words from all fields of life, and their grammatical usage. It will also equip the students with the strategies to improve the reading skill so that the students can read articles in the required time and summarize the core meanings correctly.it equally involves writing composition with the given advanced words or themes to make sure the students can

CHS 209: Intermediate Chinese Character I
This course requires that the students be taught some HSK4 words, including the pronunciation, character, meaning, and usage. Students should not only participate in the class, but also finish the assignment. narrate the story properly, and express their opinions, comments as well as feelings decently and accurately.

CHS 210: Intermediate Chinese Character II
This course is a comprehensive course of Chinese language. It is aimed at making students to learn about 1,500 new words by massive drills of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to help students to improve their ability in writing Chinese character.

CHS 401: Advanced Comprehensive Chinese I
This course is a comprehensive course of Chinese language, it is meant for students who have learnt 2500 words and many grammatical structure. It is aimed at making students to learn new words by massive drills of Chinese listening, speaking, writing and reading, and to help students improve their ability in using Chinese.
CHS 402: Advanced Comprehensive Chinese II
The course is meant to prepare the students for HSK 5 and help improve their ability in using Chinese especially with the natives.

CHS 403: Introduction to Chinese Religion and Philosophy
This course aims at introducing polytheism and three main believes in Ancient China, the foundation and development of Taoism in China, the spread and development of Buddhism in China, the spread of Islam and
Christianity in China. Meanwhile, it also introduces theory and its influence of traditional Chinese philosophies, including Confucianism,nTaoism, Mohism and Legalism etc.

CHS 405: Introduction to Chinese Linguistics
This course aims at introducing sub-principles of Chinese Linguistics such as Lexicology, Grammar, Phonetics, Character Formation, Semantics, Pragmatics, etc., and also briefly introducing the development of Ancient Chinese Linguistics, to help students have an overall understanding of Chinese linguistics and improve their abilities in using Chinese for communication and research.
CHS 409: Chinese Language Practices
The course will afford the students the opportunity to enhance their spoken Chinese and apply it in practical writing and enable the students to improve on the production of simple and coherent texts on familiar subjects or on those in which they have a particular interest such as; describing experiences, events and desires.
