4-YEAR AND 3-YEAR ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The Department offers the following undergraduate degree
programmes:
  1. A 4-year B.A. degree in Igbo and Chinese Languages (UME)
  2. A 3-year B.A. degree in Igbo and Chinese Languages (DIRECT)
AND
  1. Course for servicing B.A. Ed/ Igbo programme mounted by Education Faculty.
N.B. Presently, only courses in Igbo Language, Literature and Culture are offered/mounted.
­­­Philosophy
In keeping with the aspirations of the NUC guideline and in keeping with the motto of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the Department strives at producing sound and knowledgeable personnel in the studies concerning man, his complex nature and relationship with the world around and beyond. In this context, effort in geared towards laying solid academic foundation for scholarly studies and practical development through research in Igbo, African and Chinese Languages; Literatures and Cultures.
Objectives
The objectives and expectations of the academic programmes mounted in the Department of Igbo, African and Chinese Studies are:
  1. To develop and enhance the students awareness of the values, contributions and potentialities of their own social and cultural environment.
  2. To empower the students to contribute meaningfully towards the attainment of national goals and satisfaction of national goals.
  3. To help students in developing and utilizing the spirit of self-reliance and self-actualization.
  4. To equip the students with the necessary tools and values which will enable them to contribute meaningfully towards socio-political and economic development of the society, building a virile,strong and united country and ensuring national and international peace, cooperation, understanding and progress.
  5. To promote and preserve African and Chinese life, philosophy, world-view and rich anthropological past through the study, research-oriented development and documentation of Igbo, African and Chinese Languages, literatures and cultures.
  6. To expose the students to different aspects of African and Chinese languages, literature and cultures so as to help them achieve greater competence and sophistication in their understanding and appreciation of the values inherent in these aspects.
  7. To train them to be able to apply the knowledge so acquired for the advancement of their society.
  8. To prepare them for further studies in the discipline and for relevant careers.

 

Entry/ Admission Requirements
The candidate must pass the UME examination in addition to possession of SSCE, NECO, WASC, GCE, NABTEB certificate in not more than two sittings with credit in English Language and the relevant African Language of his study, plus three other relevant subjects as directed by the National University Commission and the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Senate.

N.B. In the numbering system, three digits are used;
  1. The first digit stands for the year of study
  2. The middle digit stands for the course or stress area.
  3. The last digit indicates the number of courses in that area which have been taught, thereby giving a chronology of courses taught.
Designation/Status of Courses
  1. General Studies Courses: These are courses under the General studies programme which students must take and pass to fulfill the University requirements for the award of a degree.
  2. Intra Faculty Courses: These are courses outside the discipline but within the departments of the faculty of Arts which must be taken and passed to fulfill the University requirements for the award of a degree.
  3. Departmental/Core/Major Courses: These are core courses within the discipline that must be taken and passed.
  4. Inter-Faculty/Electives: These are courses outside the Faculty from which students exposed to for purposes of fulfilling the minimum requirements for the award of a degree.
