4-YEAR AND 3-YEAR ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The Department offers the following undergraduate degree programmes:
- A 4-year B.A. degree in Igbo and Chinese Languages (UME)
- A 3-year B.A. degree in Igbo and Chiese Languages (DIRECT)
AND
- Course for servicing B.A. Ed/ Igbo programme mounted by Education Faculty.
N.B. Presently, only courses in Igbo Language, Literature and Culture are offered/mounted.
Entry Requirements
In addition to University minimum entry requirements, candidates must obtain credit pass in English Language and the relevant African Language of his study.
Direct entry candidates must obtain at least merit pass at NCE in the relevant African Language of his study, or two passes at GCE Advanced level or its equivalent with three other subjects at SSCE, NECO, GCE O/L; or three passes at GCE A/L with two other subjects in SSCE, NECO, GCE O/L; two passes at the UMB Examination or its equivalent with credit passes in three other subjects. In either case, a credit pass in English (SSCE/GCE.) O/L is required.

N.B. In the numbering system, three digits are used;
- The first digit stands for the year of study
- The middle digit stands for the course or stress area.
- The last digit indicates the number of courses in that area which have been taught, thereby giving a chronology of courses taught.
Designation/Status of Courses
- General Studies Courses: These are courses under the General studies programme which students must take and pass to fulfill the University requirements for the award of a degree.
- Intra Facluty Courese: These are courses outside the discipline but within the departments of the faculty of Arts which must be taken and passed to fulfill the University requirements for the award of a degree.
- Departmental/Core/Major Courses: These are core courses within the discipline that must be taken and passed.
- Inter-Faculty/Electives: These are courses outside the Faculty from which students exposed to for purposes of fulfilling the minimum requirements for the award of a degree.
